Top Movies About Food, Diet, and Health
75I'm not really sure how it happened - I used to be one of those people that made fun of the people that ate organic foods and avoided meat. Now, however, I find myself trying to eat all organic foods. I still eat meat though, but I try to only eat organic (grass-fed) meat. This is sort of a problem for me though because healthy, non-processed, organic food seems rare to find, especially in the MidWest. Fortunately, a couple grocery stores next to me have one or two organic food aisles, and, there is a Whole Foods not too far away. I think the movies in this hub were really the wake up call I needed on the source of our food and the associated problems. It is no wonder to me why so many people are overweight, sick, have diabetes, etc.
BONUS: I include an awesome video at the end of this hub - the video is "Store Wars" - it is a spoof on Star Wars with Organic Foods being the good guys and Genetically Modified Foods the bad guys!
We have been brainwashed that food should be cheap and it's not worth spending the extra money on quality food. I even had this discussion with my girlfriend the other day. I mentioned I was going to eat some organic salmon I bought from Whole Foods. She immediately asked how much it cost and sort of scoffed at the price. Well, I'd rather pay more for organic food than destroy my health by eating genetically modified foods.
In this article, I list the top movies that have changed my perspective on food. I offer a short synopsis on each of them, along with a link to the trailer.
I urge you to watch these movies and make better food choices! As said in Food Matters, "You Are What You Eat!"
Food, Inc.
Food, Inc.
I still have haunting memories of chickens that can't walk and cows not moving and standing in their own feces from this movie! Food, Inc. was the first movie on this topic I really watched. The feedlots and chicken houses depicted in this movie were very eye opening. I don't look at beef or chicken the same anymore because of this movie!
Food Matters
Food Matters
Food Matters is an excellent movie. I really enjoy the way this movie was produced. The interviews are great and one guy goes so far to say that the best thing terrorists can do is open a few more fast food restaurants and maybe throw in a couple pharmaceutical companies! The key thing I took away from this movie was the link between cheap food and pharmaceuticals - the worse our diet is, the more lucrative it is for the companies that manufacture drugs!
The Future of Food
The Future of Food
Maybe I've just been naive over the years, but I never really understood what Monsanto was all about. Now, thanks to this movie, I do. Monsanto has genetically altered corn to be resistant to their pesticides and they've patented all their genetically modified "seeds". They've gone so far as suing farmers that have the Monsanto patented seeds on their farm. This movie really makes me question the ethics of Monsanto and patent law.
King Corn
What is High Fructose Corn Syrup?
King Corn
At first I thought this movie would be stupid, but it actually turned out very great! This is a documentary of a couple college grads that get their hair tested and find out they are mainly "made of corn ." The movie documents their journey to figure out where the corn came from that got in their hair. This movie follows The Future of Food nicely, as it touches upon some of the same Monsanto patent issues. This movie also highlights some of the issues associated with the US government subsidizing corn and the impact this has had on our food supply, including the expansion of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).

I have been the same way as you, cutting way down on meat and looking for organic when I can afford and find it. I am planning on becoming a full vegetarian if I can survive the holidays. I didn't know about those movies and the trailers said a lot. Very good hub, rated up.
